Generation Rise

About us

Background

Generation Rise started in 2017 as a response to the difference in opportunities between young women and young men in Rwanda. Cultural and familial norms often lead girls in rural communities to believe their highest aspiration should be marriage, with little emphasis on further education or a career. This imbalance damages the wider community and prevents girls and young women from expressing, accessing, and achieving their dreams outside of societal standards. Generation Rise seeks to inspire and empower young people through education, dialogue and the culture of reading.

Our Approach

Generation Rise embraces an innovative, multi-faceted approach to achieving gender equity and empowering the next generation of female leaders in the region. At its core, Generation Rise is a community-based and community-driven organization – founded and led by a team of passionate young women, including previous program graduates. Through their close ties to the schools and communities with which they work, Generation Rise implements an impressive and growing portfolio of educational and career development programs to provide young women and girls with the opportunities and resources they need to be what they want to be. Understanding that promoting adolescent health and well-being is key to facilitating gender equity and women’s social and economic empowerment, the flagship programs are complemented by trainings in mental, sexual and reproductive health and rights, which Generation Rise is working to scale in new community and school settings and advocate for at a policy level. Hinging across each of its programs is an emphasis on peer support and mentorship from teachers and program graduates to provide a safe and supportive environment for the participants, as well as their broader communities, to grow and thrive.
